2009 Mission Trip
October 13-20
A group from Trinity will travel to Cuba this fall. The Rev. David Burns will lead the trip which will include a visit with our friends at La Playa Presbyterian Church in Matanzas, Luyano Presbyterian Church in Havana, and First Dora E. Valentin Presbyterian Church in Varadero. The trip will also include a visit to the Theological Seminary of Matanzas, which Trinity helps support. The purpose of the trip is to strengthen and deepen the relationship we have with our Cuban brothers and sisters and to understand how we can work together to build a bridge between our two countries. A similar trip is planned for the spring.
Building a Bridge
Trinity continues to nurture its partnership with La Playa Presbyterian Church and the Evangical Seminary of Theology (SET). On the most recent mission trip to Cuba, six Trinity members and the Rev. David Burns traveled to meet with our Presbyterian friends at First Presbyterian Church in Havana and La Playa Presbyterian Church in Matanzas.
LaPlaya Church is a growing ministry reaching Cuban Christians of all ages, including many Cuban youth. The young people are actively involved in worship through music and fellowship through a church baseball team.
The work of the Evangelical Seminary of Theology of Matanzas is increasingly important. The number of worshiping Christians in Cuba is growing at a much higher rate than qualified clergy. The seminary is an ecumenical institution fo rbasic and advanced theological training of pastors and leaders of Cuban and Latin American churches. It was founded in October 1946 as a result of the ecumenical endeavors of the Methodist, Presbyterian, and Episcopal churches. Among its students and staff members there are members of several other evangelical denominations. Since its very foundation, SET has functioned as a reference point for biblical and theological life in Cuba, and every year it is the scene of important national and international events.
