Acts of Faith

For the month of May, we will focus on the lectionary readings from the Book of Acts. This is the book of the Bible that tells the astonishing and varied story of how the people of “the way,” Jesus’ earliest followers, were formed into a church, or into “churches” in many geographical places. To everyone’s surprise, including Peter and Paul, the two central leaders of this early movement, their plans and expectations were always upended and expanded by the true central character of the story: The Holy Spirit. It continues to be true that our plans and expectations, our rules and preferences for the church, are never as imaginative and transformative as what God has in mind and is determined to do.
